Zhuhai Tunnel Officially Opens to Traffic
Source: Date:2026年03月11日

Recently, the Zhuhai Tunnel—an ultra-large-diameter shield-driven subsea tunnel in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, constructed by China Railway Tunnel Group under CREC—was officially opened to traffic.

The Zhuhai Tunnel has a mainline length of 5 kilometers, starting east of the Zhuhai Bridge and connecting with the existing Zhuhai Avenue. It extends westward, passing through the Guadingjiao mountain using the mining method, then runs beneath the embankment into the Modaomen waterway. It crosses the mid-river section using shield tunneling, turns north to connect with the mainline of Zhuhai Avenue, and ends west of the Zhuhai Bridge. The tunnel is designed as a dual six-lane urban expressway with a speed limit of 80 km/h. The shield section constructed by China Railway Tunnel Group has a single-line length of 2,930 meters, utilizing two ultra-large-diameter slurry balance TBMs—“CREC Kaituo” and “CREC Fenjing”—each with a diameter of 15.01 meters, jointly developed with China Railway Engineering Equipment Group.

The Zhuhai Tunnel is a key construction project in Guangdong Province and Zhuhai City. Vehicles can pass through the tunnel in approximately five minutes, and it remains operational even under adverse weather conditions such as typhoons. This will effectively relieve traffic pressure on the Zhuhai Bridge, improve east-west transportation efficiency in Zhuhai, and play a significant role in promoting high-quality economic development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
